The life, loves, and seditious intentions (“Cat Power!”) of the cat who works at Selected Works Used Books and Sheet Music in downtown Chicago. Hodge, who claims to have been “born litter-trained and fluent in three languages,” understands written and spoken English. He has taught himself to type on a computer keyboard, which he uses when he wants to communicate anything complicated to his humans, which is often. He also keys in YouTube videos of popular songs that he fancies, and rewrites the lyrics along more cat-centric lines. Hodge often takes a dim view of the customers and of his and the bookstore’s long-suffering owner. He is, however, surprisingly protective of mice, and, after an epiphany resulting from something he overhears one day at the bookstore, fish. His relations with the two lady cats in his life are more problematic, partly because he describes each of them to the other, without giving it much thought, as “my girlfriend—she’s a pain in the ass.” With 38 watercolor illustrations by Argentinian artist and psychotherapist (Hodge could use one) Beatriz E. Ledesma.

I've had the pleasure of Hodge's acquaintance for years, and I'm sure his story will delight both old friends & new. I was mainly hoping for lovely illustrations of Hodge, which abound in the book, and I was happy to find excellent, humorous writing that stole the show! I actually laughed out loud every few pages, with many chuckles interspersed, and, in the classic sign of a great read, almost missed my BART stop. I'd recommend this for anyone falling into at least one of these categories: literary, clever, cat-loving, and/or lyrical (the songs are not to be missed!). A great book all around!

The Secret Life of Hodge the Bookstore Cat Suzanne Erfurth Beatriz E Ledesma 9780692594025 Books Reviews

This is a thoroughly amusing book "by" Hodge, a very real cat, as told by his emanuensis, Suzanne Erfurth and wonderfully illustrated by Beatríz E. Ledesma. It's for adults, who will have to find it very funny and entertaining. Have just gotten the next book, "Hodge Sings Again" and am about to start reading it. While never having met Hodge, I feel as though I know him quite well! Highly recommended.
I'm writing this on behalf of my 95 year-old mother, Miriam Bazell. She is proud to say she doesn't have this new-fangled machine called a computer. However, she told me that she LOVED Ms. Erfurth's book and even purchased a copy for her 'cat doctor' in Portland, Oregon whom she lovingly refers to as Dr. Marc. Mom, a most dedicated 'cat-lady' in the best sense of the label, urges all to get this book but only if you want to feel happy.
First of all, I'm not Patrick Donnell--he's my husband and has not read the book. Nevertheless, we are an ailurophile household (we have four cats), and I have been a frequent visitor to Selected Works, Hodge's milieu, and have met him on several occasions. Cats give little away when you meet them, but I'm convinced that they, and therefore, Hodge and his ilk, are much more aware of their surroundings than they will let on. Hodge's amanuensis writes creatively and elegantly--obviously an admirer of the furry species. The stories in the book typify what we'd like to think the animals are up to, and in the process of reading it, I learned a British slang term for a cat of mixed ancestry, the moggy. I don't hesitate to recommend this wonderful book to all those who have a sense of humor and like to imagine what their pets are thinking (other than the other-worldly, mind-in-park stare).
Beautifully illustrated and written, a glimpse into the life of Chicago's famed and award-winning feline, Hodge, is now in print. Author Suzanne Erfurth and artist Beatriz Ledesma have done a marvelous job recreating this character of a cat, his caretaker, Keith Peterson, and Hodge's home, Keith's wonderful used book store, Selected Works Used Books and Sheet Music. Yes, it is a real store with a real owner and a real cat in Chicago.

I visited owner Keith Peterson when I heard about "a wonderful used book store" with a kitten. Hodge was still quite young, and I was living a few blocks away. Over my remaining time in The Loop I enjoyed many happy hours browsing through books & music, chatting with owner Keith, and attempting to be friendly with Hodge.

(Sometimes I wore boots and it wasn't necessarily because of the weather. There was a period when Hodge waxed quite enthusiastic about sharpening his claws on leather... or whatever was available at that level....) But that's a story for another day.

Buy this book.
You'll chuckle and perhaps guffaw.
Just beware This feline has a way of warming your heart!
Charming and cunning with lovely illustrations. Hodge is a force of nature who never doubts his own place in the universe, and luckily he has a patient companion in Keith. .
Delightful and light-hearted fun! I didn't understand many of the references but had some fun on YouTube to figure out what they were talking about. Can't wait to see Hodge again in person!
A cute story with wonderful illustrations. I loved reading about Hodge's adventures in the book store.
